BER - What is it?

A BER is an objective scale of comparison for the energy performance of a building ranging from A1 to G. It is rather like the mpg (or l/km) rating for a motorcar or the A to G rating for a household electrical appliance.

BERs will be carried out by specially trained BER assessors, registered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI). A list of BER Assessors is available on the SEI website . BER assessors (usually building professionals like architects, engineers etc.) must have successfully completed a training programme that meets the requirement of a Training Specification which was published in October 2006. This specification may also be viewed and downloaded on the SEI website.

BER assessors must also meet any other requirements set by SEI, including the signing up to a Code of Conduct.

It is an offence for persons not registered with SEI as BER assessors to purport to carry out a BER assessment service for the purposes of the Regulations.
